Quick and Easy Wallpaper Panel DIY
Today I’m sharing a little how-to on my DIY Wallpaper Panels. Creating your own wallpaper panels can be an exciting and cost-effective way to refresh your space. Transforming an open wall into a statement piece can breathe new life into your living space. Using wallpaper as artwork is a clever and stylish solution, especially if you have remnants lying around. Here's how to tackle this project effectively:
I had a large open wall above the sofa in my apartment, and it was just begging for some decor to liven it up. I had some beautiful wallpaper on hand (meant to be used in my old house) and thought it would be the perfect thing to frame and hang on the walls.
The quotes I initially got for framing were over $600 - but I ended up paying just $135 for these 3 IKEA (yes, you heard me right, IKEA) frames, and framing the wallpaper myself.
Wallpaper frames not only add character but also serve as a personal expression of style, making that open wall a true focal point of your living space. Plus you can take them from home to home, making them the perfect addition to a temporary living space.
Below is a step by step guide to tackle this project, but let me know if you have any questions and I’ll be happy to answer them!
Materials Needed
Wallpaper of your choice. Choose a wallpaper that resonates with your current decor. Whether it's floral or a textured design, ensuring it complements your color scheme will tie the room together beautifully.
IKEA Frames (Mine are the 27” by 39” - I recommend choosing a frame that matches the width of your wallpaper roll to avoid cutting wallpaper vertically)
Wallpaper adhesive or paste
Paint roller or brush
Ruler or measuring tape
Straight edge or level
Wallpaper smoothing tool or credit card
Scissors
Steps
Select Your Wallpaper: Choose a wallpaper that suits your style and complements your room. Remember to account for the pattern repeat when calculating how much you need.
Measure and Cut: Measure the wallpaper against your panels. Cut the wallpaper to size, making sure to leave a little extra on the edges for tucking.
Apply Adhesive: Depending on your wallpaper type, apply adhesive directly to the panel or the back of the wallpaper. Use a paint roller or brush to ensure an even coat.
Position the Wallpaper: Carefully place the wallpaper onto the panel, starting from one edge. Align it properly, especially if you have a patterned wallpaper.
Smooth It Out: Use a smoothing tool or credit card to push out any air bubbles and ensure a flat application. Start from the center and work your way outwards.
Trim Excess: Once the wallpaper is in place, carefully trim any excess material hanging over the edges with a utility knife or scissors.
Let Dry: Allow the panels to dry completely according to the wallpaper adhesive instructions. This usually takes a few hours.
Install Panels: Place panels in frames. These panels can be hung directly on walls using appropriate fasteners or arranged as a decorative feature. Consider creating a gallery wall or an accent area with your panels.
