The Basket House: A Lesson in Timeless, Layered Design
When Architectural Digest featured Barbara “Brunch with Babs” Costello’s Connecticut home—affectionately called the Basket House—I was instantly charmed. The former 1830s basket shop was reimagined by Moore House Design into a warm, textural retreat that feels both historic and completely fresh. Every detail nods to its past—from wicker-inspired millwork to Delft-style tiles featuring local flora—without ever feeling theme-y. It’s the perfect example of how a home can honor its story while still embracing modern comfort.
What I love most about this project is its sense of intentional layering. Natural materials like oak, terracotta, and marble ground the interiors, while cozy nooks and thoughtful built-ins make the home feel lived-in and loved. Even the outdoor spaces are treated as extensions of the home—inviting, unpretentious, and endlessly welcoming.
It’s a beautiful reminder that timeless design isn’t about following trends—it’s about connection, craft, and the quiet confidence of a home that feels collected over time. The Basket House proves that when design tells a story, it always feels like home.
