Our Kitchen Renovation: The Design Plans

Our kitchen renovation has officially begun, so I figured it was time to start sharing the finalized drawings and plans with you all! We have been working with a custom cabinet installer in Dallas for the last several months, developing the plans to provide our kitchen and mudroom with extra storage and an updated look!

For those of you who are just joining, my home is a 1950s bungalow that we’ve been renovating bit by bit over the last several years. I love living in a house with history and natural character but it’s not for the faint of heart. This kitchen has slowly been pieced together over time. So far, we have updated the flooring, updated the backsplash and counters, and added new appliances (when we moved in, there was no dishwasher). Our cabinets however, provided quite the challenge: the paint job we had done upon move in was peeling, the type of cabinets we had didn’t allow for door knobs or drawer pulls, meaning our white cabinets were susceptible to extra dirt. Storage was hard to come by, and as someone who spends a tremendous amount of time in the kitchen, I was resorting to some unorthodox storage methods. Our kitchen is also in the same space as our mudroom, which similarly had no storage and was in desperate need of updating.

We decided to pull the trigger on the project this year and I’m already thrilled with how it’s turning out… while it’s not finished yet, keep scrolling for a sneak peek!

The stove and vent hood area where we are adding a top row of glass cabinets. Originally we had a full oven in the center, but replaced it with a gas cooktop in our first round of renovations. There was also a microwave directly above the oven when we moved in. We moved both to the wall to the left of this space to allow for a more modern look.

Directly across for the range is the fridge. We are adding a fridge surround cabinet on this wall (our fridge use to sit without any storage around it) and on the side of the cabinet will be shelves for endless rows of cookbooks! This side will also have glass cabinets on the top.

In place of what use to be a hallway from the kitchen to the bath, we added a bar area with open shelving up top. Now, we are adding a pull-out trash drawer below the current bar, and lining the top area with columns of white shiplap.

And finally, the mudroom bench! I am so excited to finally have beautiful storage in this space which has no storage before. We’ll have two drawers at the bottom and storage spaces up top.

The layout - just a little drawing to make sense of it all!
